FISHING TACKLE

All you need to know about fishing tackle including information on fishing rods, reels, line, lures, flies, boats, tackle boxes and clothing. Also details on all kinds of fishing including tips and techniques for bass, trout, carp, pike, salmon, walleye, tuna and marlin.

Correct Fishing Tackle Selection is the Key to Bagging a Big One

Before heading out on the water or to a local fishing spot, customizing your tackle to suit the fish species you are tageting is extremely important. Most successful fishing outings target only one species of fish, and all tackle and gear selection is made according to what works best for that fish in the prevailing conditions. This might mean a fishing boat is necessary to take advantage of places inaccessible on foot, or it might mean making a choice between using lures, flies or baits. Picking the right rod and reel combination, as well as line and other fishing tackle to suit the weight class of fish is also paramount.

Different Categories of Fishing Gear

In general, fishing can be broken up into two large categories; saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing. Then there is your preferred rod and reel combination, which could suit, for example, fly fishing, lure fishing, baitcasting, trolling or fishing from the beach. After that, there are categories of tackle to suit each species of fish, and finally categories which suit a particular kind of fish during a specific time of year.

Many people seem to prefer specializing in either freshwater or saltwater fishing. In the US, freshwater fishing is extremely popular, with bass, fly, carp, pike, trout, carp and salmon fishing all very popular. Perhaps this is because the United States is blessed with a huge number of freshwater lakes, rivers, streams and creeks that are teeming with good-sized fish. Of course, those living on the coasts will be more likely to spend their time saltwater fishing, either sea or deep sea fishing from boats or casting from beaches, rocky shorelines or into esturaries and tidal rivers.

Let's take bass fishing as an example for optimizing fishing tackle. Tackle choice for bass is very dependent upon the time of day you are trying your luck. Those seeking bass in the early morning will most likely opt for buzzbaits and spinnerbaits that cause fast action near the surface of the water. For those who are fishing in the midday, lures that move slowly along the bottom of the water such as crankbaits are more suitable. In the late afternoon, however, lures that resemble small prey such as crawfish, lizards, frogs, small fish and grubs, not to mention worms, are quite popular.

For coastal saltwater fishing, the single most important factor is the tide rather than the time of day. Most fish species tend to time their feeding to a particular tidal state, so matching your fishing trip to coincide with the perfect tidal conditions for your target species is vital if you are to take your bag limit!

A serious fisherman or fisherwoman will have a wide variety of fishing tackle and gear on hand from which to choose from. While rods, reels, lines and boats are fairly obvious equipment considerations, a well organized tackle box is also the sign of a successful fishing enthusiast. Hooks, sinkers, floats, swivels, traces, lures, and flies are popular tackle box items, but don't overlook other essentials such as measuring tape, flashlight, pliers, scissors, gloves, tape, gps device, portable scales, scaler, and of course, a good fishing knife and a waterproof camera. A quality fishing creel is perfect for keeping everything together conveniently, while clothing is also an important consideration. Spray jackets, hats, polarising sunglasses and vests are vital add-ons to your usual wardrobe. The last thing you want to happen on a fishing trip is to be caught without an essential piece of fishing gear!
